Mini Blog: release dates

November 29, 2011 by Ally Carter 28 Comments

Hi everybody!

I hope you’re all having a great week.  I’m working hard on Heist Society 3, but thought I’d pop in to clarify something that I seem to be seeing a lot in blog comments these days.

Seems like every day at least one person will say something along the lines of WE SHOULD MAKE ALLY RELEASE GG5 FASTER.  Or WHY WON’T ALLY RELEASE THE BOOK EARLY?!  Or somesuch.

Edited to add: Honestly, this always conjures up the mental picture of me locking the book inside a safe beneath my bed and laughing evilly and shrilling about how I could give it to you, but I won’t–I won’t, I say.  *more evil laughter*

Actually, that couldn’t be further from the truth.  There are two things you all need to know on this subject.

1.  I don’t determine book release dates.  That decision is made by bookstore reps and sales departments and editors and production staffs and literally dozens of people I HAVE NEVER MET.

2.  Even if all these people did think it would be good to release the book earlier than the date they all agreed to release the book in the first place, that isn’t possible.

I literally JUST finished the book.  It still has to go through many, many hoops to be bound and shipped and stocked and everything else that turns a book from a file on my computer to a book in your hands.  There are, again, tons of people rushing to make this possible.

So please remember we are all working as hard as we can.

If it were within my power I’d have a new book in your hands every few months.  But that would kill me.  And I don’t want to die.

So in the meantime I thank you for wanting to read my books.  From the bottom of my heart I thank you.

And I also appreciate your patience.

Have a great night.

Ally

ps:  for those of you who obviously haven’t seen it, I actually wrote a very long blog post on this subject a few months back.  It’s available here if you search for it and also at this link.  I’d highly recommend you read it if you’d like to understand why books take so much longer to write and publish than to read (because, ultimately, that’s the problem.)

Thank you so much Ally for writing this blog post; I am so excited to read your next release and I very much appreciate your books. I am so glad you are able to write so quickly. I am very excited to read Out of Sight, Out of Time, the third installment to your Heist Society series, and to see the winning entry of the t-shirt contest.

Any true fan would wait five years, and keep re-reading the other books, over and over.

We know you work as hard as you can Ally! I would wait for years and years if it meant you had enough time to make the books good and the way you want! I LOVE the GG and Heist Society books! Thank you sooo much! I’m so excited to red Out of Sight, Out of Time! I’ll just re-read GG 1-4 until then and it’ll hold me over just fine! Thanks Ally šŸ™‚

Compared to some other authors, Ally releses her books really fast, so we should be patient. Or at least try. šŸ˜‰ Your awsome Ally!

Even if you can’t release it early, YOU CAN GIVE US EXCERPTS, RIGHT?! Please say yes!

I totally get it and I’m being patient because the wait is worth for a book that’s part of the MARVELOUS Gallagher Girls series. But I was just wondering if you would release any DELETED SCENES? And you also said way earlier that the first chapter of the book would be out at the back of GG4 by November or December, is it out?

Yes, please don’t write so fast you die because then there wouldn’t be anymore books. People should realize this šŸ™‚
Also, to all you GG’s out there. Go vote for Cammie at the YA Sisterhood’s Heroine Tourney!

Hi Ally! Lately I have been thinking about becoming a book editor, and was wondering if you could tell me exactly what your editor does for you. Thanks in advance!

I understand also, it takes a long time to write a book and you cant just say “im going to publish this now!” You have to check spelling, see if you haven’t copied anyone, plus it takes a lot of imagination to create a new world of adventure.
