The blizzard of 2011

February 1, 2011 by Ally Carter 95 Comments

The weather people have been saying for a few days that the blizzard of the century was on its way.  Well, I guess it’s here.  The good news is that I have a safe, warm house, plenty of food, and the electricity seems to be holding.  The bad news is I’m sure I’m one of the lucky ones.

I hope everyone has a safe, dry place to ride out the storm–especially since this system is covering much of the country.

Hang in there, and be good.

Ally

In Illinois, schools were being cancelled BEFORE the blizzard hit. We’re expecting about 18 inches. Now it’s getting started with like 40mph wind, and there’s an empty cornfield down the road, so pretty much no protection from the wind, which is coming from that direction.

The last blizzard we had was in December, the only highway in and out of the town was closed down and people were trapped there in their cars for hours before an IDOT truck came to plow them out and break into the high school that’s next to the highway for refuge. I pray that everyone stays safe.

Who knows? Maybe you and others writers, both aspiring and published, will have a writing breakthrough or something.

Not really a blizzard here, but we had the day off from school… again because of this constant snow. There’s supposed to be an ice storm tomorrow on top of all the snow we already have. This weather is seriously getting ridiculous. Seriously. Well, good luck shoveling and stay safe!!

I live in Jersey, and cannot believe how much snow we’ve gotten!!! We are only allowed 3 snow days a year, which is annoying, because we will probably go over that limit and have to have more days of school in the spring πŸ™ well good luck with building that snowman!

all this snowpocalypse across the country is crazy! But it’s funny to me, because I’m in one of the only areas of the country -not- getting hit with it. I look outside and see nothing but blue skies…granted, it’s freezing out, but still. Bundle up everyone!

All this talk about snow makes me sad. I live in California and where I live we only get 5 inches of snow at the most every 5 or 6 years. The last one We got was when I was in 8th grade. I’m now in 10th……… I wish I could play in the snow. πŸ™ But be safe everyone! Get some hot coco to drink and some of Ally’s books and you’ll be safe. πŸ™‚

it actually didn’t hit here today, we were suposed to get a snow day today, but it never even started.

last week it was horrible, though. we had a half day on Wednesday and didn’t come back til monday the roads are still terrible though, and they only have a few sidewalks dug out and the streets are a mess. and a lot of people are getting hurt from it

the funny thing is that until last year we never usually got more than a few inches each year.

oh, well. stay warm and be safe everybody!

I live here in Wisconsin. (You know the Rose Bowl’s Badgers and Super Bowl’s Packers are here! I didn’t watch the Rose Bowl and probably won’t watch the Super Bowl.) We have had 3 snow days. One was today, and we have one tomorrow. I am thinking that we will have a few more soon, so we will probably have some make-up days… πŸ™
Did you know that Wisconsin is probably the only state that would have people write parodies for songs on sports teams? Check out “Teach Me How to Bucky” and “Green and Yellow.”
    Yeah. I know. It’s a Wisconsin thing…

I live in Connecticut, too, and I sink up to my head, too. I might go sledding today, though! That should be fun!
Anyway, it’s not that it snowed a lot at once (although it’s done that…), it’s that once it snows, it JUST WON’T MELT!!! It is kind of frustrating to shovel the driveway and have all the snow roll back down the hill to where it started. I really love snow, but not when it turns to ice, and not when it gets old and dirty. Also not when it eats me alive and I can’t get back out again. That really sucks. My dad said that he used to burrow under the snow when he was a kid, and make whole caves and tunnels under there. I’m not really sure if I can do that, but I guess I have nothing better to do when it’s a snow day every day of the week except for Mondays and Fridays, when there’s either 90-minute delays or 12:30 dismissals… And why, might you ask, would school be cancelled on such a regular basis? The answer is quite simple, really. You see, it pertains to the excess of–SNOW!!!
Now they’re shoveling it into trucks and taking it to SNOW DUMPS. Yes, they have SNOW DUMPS!!! You know, like for trash, only it’s snow, and it’s gonna melt in the spring. That is, if spring ever comes!
I’ll bet that groundhog that predicts when spring is going to come is holed up in his little burrow with his cup of hot cider and his fluffy socks and matching robe, saying, “Oh, I’m not going out there. There’re reporters… and it’s cold out there, too. No, I think I’ll just stay nice and warm down here. Yes, that sounds like a good idea.” And then he finishes his cider and takes off his slippers and robe, and crawls into bed, snuggling deep under the covers. Yeah, that really sounds like the life right now, when I know that I have to go outside and shovel the snow in the driveway. The snow that, amazingly enough, will probably magically reappear by the end of the day. I guess this is one way to get that “hot bikini bod” before swimsuit season. Now I just have to work on the tan part. Oh, that can wait ’till later. You know, when it’s not below freezing every day, every hour of every day, and every freaking minute of every hour of every day.
Well, my school takes that lovely opportunity to turn up the heat as far as it will go until the class is sweating. Of course, the teachers don’t think it’s warm. They think it’s freezing! I know teachers were born human, and sometime decades ago they were kids, but I wonder how old they are when they turn into… teachers. I’m voting late twenties, early thirties, so they’re old enough to already have the spouse and the kids that they keep ranting about or devoting precious minutes of class (minutes, that on any other occasion could not be wasted on children arguing over the right answer to a problem, even if their semester’s grade depends on it)to talking about their beloved children or grandchildren for TEN WHOLE MINUTES. It’s better than geography class(where we have to correct maps we drew the night before and, in the process, completely ruining half an hour of hard work with red scribbles), but it still isn’t that fun. I kind of prefer thinking of teachers as being inhuman machines that exist to educate tomorrow’s future, and I don’t want to think of them as humans because then I might actually feel sorry for them, having to correct kids’ papers all day and preach boredom to a rude handful of barely-evolved-out-of-the-monkey-stage kids every stinking day of the year. That wouldn’t exactly be great, would it? And on top of that, they get payed pretty bad salaries.
But I don’t really know the specifics of teacher paychecks, as I am not a teacher, nor the person who signs their paychecks.

Wow, this comment has gotten really off track. I started with snow and ended with teachers, with a groundhog in between. I guess I should really wrap up now, even though I could just sign off here and no one would know that I even commented. I mean, right now there are sixty-two of these things already on Ally’s blog, and who would take the time to read another? I guess I’ll just copy and paste this comment and put it into a Word document, then print it and put it away somewhere… maybe in my diary? I don’t know. All I’m saying is that this comment is pretty long and I want to keep it. So, yeah. That’s about it.

Great books, Ally! Can’t wait to read Heist Society 2!

    Thanks!
