Ally's Email Address

December 5, 2010 by Ally Carter 191 Comments

Hi all,

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of comments from people looking for an email address for me.  Thanks.  I’m happy that you are invested in me and in the books, but I’m afraid I don’t have a public email address at this time.  I used to–several years ago.  But I took it down and I don’t anticipate ever putting it up again.

Why?  Well, the first and most obvious reason is time.  Email takes up A TON of time.

First, you have the essential emails–like ones from my editor and agent and family members.  I usually sit down to do email first thing in the morning, and there are several days where I don’t get up again for hours.  Because that’s the business.  And business email comes before fun email every time.

To add another few hours a week or month on top of that (especially when many of the fan emails would include a phrase like HURRY UP AND WRITE FASTER!!!!!!!!) seemed pretty counter-intuitive.  Basically, everyone wanted me to stop writing the books long enough to read and reply to emails that told me that I needed to spend more time…writing the books.

So I took it down.

The reason I have absolutely no regrets about taking it down is that 99.9% of all email I received fell into one of the following categories:

1.  Will there be a movie?  Are you writing another book?  How many books will you write?  Or (as I like to call them) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS emails.

Frequent blog readers have seen them here in the comments section.  Twitter users have seen them on twitter.  And, yes, when there was an email address I got them there too.  All the time.  But if people will spend five minutes–just five minutes–looking for the answers to those questions they will find them.  That they don’t want/or aren’t willing to look, I decided, wasn’t my responsibility to fix.

2.  I want to be a writer emails.

As someone who taught herself how to write (more or less) I’m always happy to talk about the writing process, which is why I’ve dedicated a section of this site to that subject.  If you want to be a writer, you can find a lot of help right there.

Plus, there are dozens of VERY GOOD websites dedicated to writing. I recommend .

3.  I am doing a school project and need help emails.

I know everyone thinks that it doesn’t take that much time for an author to answer 5 questions for their project.  But if 100 people think that a year, then it’s 500 questions.  Then it’s at least a week’s worth of work.  Then that’s a week that the new book doesn’t get any work…  And so on and so on.

Plus, to tell you the truth, the 5 questions were always the same questions.  That’s why those questions are answered here on the site.

4.  Spam or unnecessary emails.

In the years when I had a public email I also got–literally–hundreds of emails that served no purpose whatsoever.  They were forwarded messages about chain letters that would doom me to death.  They were mass emails like “so and so has a new profile picture on goodreads!”  “So and so wants you to be her friend on Friendzy”.  “So and so likes the color blue!  Do YOU like the color blue?”

They served no purpose other than to make me spend 10 seconds scanning and deleting them.  Hundreds of these, I got, folks.  And they got really old really fast.

5.  The “THIS is what you should do” emails.

It’s awesome when readers feel invested in the stories and the characters, but whenever I would get an email telling me what had to happen in the next book I had to delete that email IMMEDIATELY for both legal and creative reasons.  Legal, because if that idea ended up actually happening then they could sue me for “stealing their idea”.  And creative because, I’m afraid I have to make these decisions myself.  Sorry.

6.  The “I love your books” emails.

These, of course, were the golden ones.  The joy.  The best part of this business.  But to keep an email address up JUST to, basically, get bragged on didn’t seem like a very fair and just reason to do it.  I love that you guys love the books, but you don’t have to write to tell me that.  Just keep reading and referring the books to friends and you’ll be doing me the biggest favors ever.

In the meantime, I hear from readers every day.  All day.  Here, in the comments section of the blog, and on Twitter, mostly.  So if you want to say something to me, you can say it there.  I know because hundreds of people do so every week.  This is, again, why I don’t miss email.  And why I probably be sharing an email with the world again in the foreseeable future.

Thanks,

Ally

    Hi Ally,
I really enjoyed the Gallagher Girls series. I read them all a day each. I need you to make a movie for me. So many people want the same. There are videos about Out of Sight Out of Time trailer on youtube. I have so much in common with Cammie. I take martial arts. When i read your books i feel like im in the book. I dreamt about the books. Your books arent any ordinary book. No, they’re special, just like you! That’s why i recommend you TRY to make a movie. Three letters can go a long way. I believe in you, and so do many other people. Please Ms. Ally, TRY as hard as you can to make a movie and reach a goal. Like Cammie, she doesn’t give up, she keeps going to defeat the Circle Of Cavan.
    Please Ms. Ally,
    Ally

      Hi Ally,
I am writing what I think the rest of Cammie’s story is, along with Bex and Liz and Cammie daughter’s point of few. I think she would marry Zack have fun with her friends, and much more. I wanted to know if it would be ok to write these even if I just showed my friends and family. (because these stories are off your ideas)
      Thanks so much,

        Dear FanGirl20153261,

I was just about to ask ally if she could write one more follow up book as a tell all of what happens to the characters in the Gallagher Girls books when I saw your post. I was just wondering if you do get round to writing the books if you could maybe send me a copy or post a preview on here. If you could that would be fab:)
        Best wishes, Abi Ackroyd xx;)

Hi Ally, i loved the GG books. I read the last one in less than a day because i wanted to know what happened. I was just wandering if you could give me some advice on writing my own books.I have written short stories for school and for my own choice but i would like to start writing longer, proper novels. I understand why you have shut down your e-mail. I didn’t know about you when you did have it up because I only started reading your books at the start of this summer.
Thanks Ally if you can help me, and i was also wandering when the 6th GG book will be coming to the UK???

    Dear Ally Carter,

I really like your Gallagher girls series. So far I have only read the 1st two books in the series but I think they are real page turners and they are very interesting. However, I am a bit confused about Cammie’s age. On the 2nd page of ‘I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have To Kill You’ Cammie says ‘I’ll turn sixteen next month’ and this is at the start of the school year (she says she loves the start of school). Presumably, the start of the school year is September because Cammie says that it was the ‘long line of limousines that brought my classmates back to school last September’. So that would mean that she should turn sixteen in October. However, by November, she is still fifteen and at the start of the 2nd book on the very 1st page it says she is fifteen and this is after the winter holidays. I hope I am not mistaken about this and please correct me if I am. I am going to read all the Gallagher girl books, two of my friends have read them and they recommended them to me.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I hope you could get back to me if you find the time.

    Yours sincerely,
    Aisling 🙂

Hello! English girl speaking here ~
I just wanted to commend you for writing your fabulous books!! I absolutely love them and I am looking forward to the next one down the line! (No pressure for you to rush, because i would rather that the book was excellent and was written in a superb style instead of rushed and a disappointment) No offence intended!!!

I know one of your frequently asked questions is “Is there a movie!??????”, and I know the answer. I just would like to know what ways to find out when auditions are available, I would save up and fly across to America or where ever they would be held because I would love to audition and possibly be considered. I understand that nothing makes me special and stand out from the crowd, but I’m still interested!!!!!!!! I’m attempting to secure a A* in Drama for Gcse and gain some experience of acting so that I will stand a slight chance at auditions (:

Please continue writing your wonderful books because I love them and they always inspire me. I often read them before bed and constantly read them again…and again… AND (guess what the word is…) AGAIN!!

i don’t think I have anything else to say…oh! Ms.Carter, if you have any spare time (which I highly doubt with the deadlines that you have to complete,) Please read this comment and I don’t want to act special in any way, so, possibly could you email me, again, I highly doubt it BUT if you could and reply me the answer or something similar, it would mean the world to me!!

Thank you for time for reading this comment!

Dedicated (But not insane and strange, although weird and wonderful in a nice way…I hope :D) Fan!

I don’t know if you will see this and i know everyone says how they love your books but I just wanted to say thank you so much for writing the Gallagher Girls series. I found the series in my school library and thought this sounds like a good book so I found the first one and started reading. I borrowed all the books out and read them. You know how people say the book is so good that you can’t put it down? Well I never experienced that until I came to this series. I could not stop reading them. When I went to bed I would just think about everything that happens. I re-read them again on the holidays. I just ordered the whole series online so that I can keep them to re-read again and again. Gallagher Girls is by far my favourite series ever. I’m hoping to receive the books in a few days and then I can read UWS. My friends aren’t exactly book worms and they don’t understand why I can’t stop reading but it is honestly the best series of books I’ve ever read. Once I’ve finished UWS I will probably read your other books but I don’t think anything can compare to Gallagher Girls. Even when i grow older, I will always remember the Gallagher Girls. You changed my life by writing these books and I cannot thank you enough. It would mean so much if you could reply to me. I can’t wait to read UWS but I’ll be so upset when it ends. I love you and your books. Thank you so much Ally.

    Dear Ms. Ally Carter,

I have read many books and series but none of them have changed my life like yours. My cousin was the one who told me that I should read the Gallagher Girls Series. She told me what it was about and I thought I would like it. I began reading it and it was really good! I found that as I continued reading, the books just got better and better until I couldn’t stop reading them. I started playing games and pretending to be a spy. I played spy games with my brother and my cousin. We would hide behind trees and try not to be seen by my other cousin John. It was a lot of fun.

From reading these books I haven’t only learned about spies though. When I read the book, “Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover,” I thought about the way Macey seemed when Bex, Liz and Cammie first met her. She was acting kind of snotty. However, when they got to really know her, Bex, Liz and Cammie realized that she just needed a friend and they began to really like her. Now I know that when someone is acting grumpy or mean they probably just need a friend so I try to be nice to those people. I knew a girl once who was sometimes mean and seemed unfriendly. I understand now that she just needed someone to be kind to her. I have been thinking lately about how I can act more friendly to people like that.

I have always wanted to write a book and your books helped me look at writing from a new angle. I was always trying to write fantasy books, but ever since I started reading this series, I have wanted to write a realistic fiction book. For example, I want to write a book about kids who can do things without having magic powers, but by being good at certain skills like the Gallagher girls. I also think that a cool book to write would be about what it is like to go to Blackthorn.

I have been really enjoying this book series and I plan to read more of your books when I am finished with the Gallagher Series.

    Sincerely,
    Lynn P.

    Hi Ally,
I am an eighth grader at Cherryfield Elementary School. I recently read your book Only the Good Spy Young. I loved it so much. It was such an awesome story. What inspired you to write this book? It was exciting and the reader is never bored. I’ve also read Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover, and I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You.
I love writing, so I also like to read. I find inspiration in the books that I read, Only the Good Spy Young was no exception. It was such a good book I can’t wait to read some other books by you. I’m excited to read the other books in the Gallagher Girls Series.
What thoughts do you have on making the Gallagher Girl books into movies? I think they would make great movies. You should write more Gallagher Girl books, all your fans would love to have more books.

    Dear Ms. Carter,
My reason for leaving this comment is probably exactly what you would consider a “This is what you should do” email, but I just wanted to tell you how much I LOVE your Gallagher Girl Series. The characters became more than just characters to me, they became real and I felt like they were my best friends. I felt like a Gallagher Girl right along with them and there were PLENTY of times I totally could’ve kissed Zach, which brings me to my main reason for this post. Zach is every girls dream guy. He has his fair share of secrets, but then, who doesn’t? I can’t get enough of Zach and Cammie. They have to be one of my favorite book couples EVER. I actually just finished United We Spy this morning and read A Gallagher Wedding right away. I also started reading fanfictions and was somewhat surprised at how bad they were (and I’m not just talking about the spelling and grammar). A lot of them make Zach out to be a jerk and he’s not. I feel like Zach and Cam aren’t portrayed the way they should be and you’re the only one who knows the characters well enough to write about them without changing who they are as characters. Most of the time, when a fanfiction changes the personality of a character it’s okay, but Zach and Cam, as well as the others, aren’t the kind of characters you can do that to. I really hope you consider writing a spinoff series to the Gallagher Girls about their lives in the real world or what they did post graduation from Gallagher Academy. I had so much fun with these characters and the entire series that I’m not ready to let them go yet.

    Thanks,
    Mady

I know, I know, Im only on the fourth book, how dare me!! but I had just finished the third one and I thought, it would be REALLY cool if Ally wrote a new series about Gilly. I asked my friend what she thought and she said that it was a REALLY good idea. It would be like The Lord Of The Rings. they wrote tlotr THAN he wrote the Hobbit.

I hope you take my idea into consideration, Im sure im not the only one who wants more background on Gilly.

    Dear Fellow Gallagher Sister Ally,
I am hoping that you can read this and tell me the answers, if you can. I am a fan of your Gallagher Academy series. I even consider myself a true Gallagher girl. I believe that i would do very well at the Gallagher Academy, but then again you probably hear that from everyone.
Whenever I get tired of my own boring life I escape (practically run away) to the Gallagher Academy. It is like a second home. Well i guess it would be more like my first home because it is the only one that i have truly never left. I imagine many times walking down the staircase and seeing the pigeons. I can see myself going through the secret passage ways and hiding for awhile.
I have many friends, and they are great. But i do not have anyone as great as Bex, Liz, and/or Macey. I do hope that one day I will have a Macey of my own to judge my hair and clothes in a loving way. A Liz to tell me when I am doing my math wrong (she would be highly disappointed in my geometry grades). And my favorite, a Bex to stand up for me and also tell me when i mess up.
Anyway, I am writing you because I wanted to thank you so much for Creating A “safe house” for us, so that i can go there when i really feel like a break. I loved the ending, it was perfect. Well as far as endings go, because it sucks when things end. But i know that the Gallagher Academy will live on in all of us.
I know that you had a good reason for ending everything the way it was. But i can’t help but want to ask a few questions if you don’t mind. They are:
-Do Zack and Cammie stay together? Does he change his mind about kids?
    -What about Abby and Townsend?
-Did Cammie’s mom and Mr. Solomon’ wedding go okay? Does Macey go overboard with planning?
-Do Macey and Preston get together?
-Is the Circle of Cavan finally defeated for real?
-And most important, what happens to the Gallagher Academy? Do they rebuild?
I believe that is all. Thank you for reading this, I hope you can email me these answers. And thank you again for my “safe house” and I will never forget that United we spy.
    You’re fellow Gallagher Sister,
    Lydia Timeus

    Dear Ms.Ally,
I just finished reading the Gallager Girls series. And can I just say I love them. I love them so much because Cammie reminds me of myself. I am always able to disappear in PLAIN SIGHT!!!!!! But, I love your books I was wondering if you were going to write another book after “A Gallager Wedding”? If you are you would be my hero because, I have never been a reader. I thought reading was stupid, then I picked up your first book and couldn’t stop reading them. I want you to write a book after “United We Spy” because they are so good, and I always wondered what Cammie and Zachary’s life would be like now with Mr. Soloman being Cammie’s dad. I hope you write another book.
    Love,
    Joc

    Dear Ally,
I just read the Gallager Wedding and, you said that it does contain spoilers for the last book in the series. So you are writings another one. Is it because of what all of your fans wanted because they did. I have a few questions. If you don’t mind making things more clear:
    – there is another book what will you name it?
    – is it going to take place right after United we spy? Or the wedding?
    – I hope your kiddo isn’t sick to long, I hate being sick.

    Dear Ally,

I think you should write a book that shows what happens when Cammie gets married and has kids, could you please do that because I’m dying to know what happens to her when she gets out of college and everything.

    Hi Ms.Ally!
I started reading you’re books when I was in 6th Grade. I’m in 8th Grade know and still haven’t ever read a book that kept me as intrigued as all of your books. I recently started reading the Embassy Row books and know that I’m gonna get pulled back into your writing!! I absolutely love your stories. I may not relate to Cammie but I feel like she is my best friend. Your characters come to life and always catch my attention. They are all so real, but so special. When reading about characters like Zach, it makes me really want to meet someone like him. I have never loved a book as much as I love your series. I could write much more about how special your book is but I have one question. I really would like to send you a letter about how I felt when reading your books, or I would love to get a book signed. You are such a creative person. I hope to someday be able to be as creative as you are. Is there any chance you are doing book signings soon? Or do you accept fanmail? I live in the Ohio area and would really like to get your autograph.
Thank you for creating a world that helps my forget my pain. You are my role model.
    Thank You
    Kira

    Dear Ms. Ally Carter,
i just finished the Gallagher Girls series and LOVED it! But I also have one question that has not been answered yet. In the first book, one of my favorite characters was Josh, but in later books he just slowly disappeared. It would really make my year if you could please answer what happened to him. If you don’t have time I understand.
    From, Ava

I don’t know if you will get the chance to read my message but i hope you do because i have some question that i have been dying for you to answer. 1. Is there going to be a movie? Now don’t get mad but i just really want to know if there is going to be a movie. 2. Have you considered continuing the Gallagher Girls series? 3. Will you please continue the series because these books are amazing and I can’t get them out of my mind. Please take these questions into consideration and i am really looking forward to your response. Thanks for taking the time to read this one more thing if you won’t continue the series can you think about continuing them in I don’t know maybe Zach’s point of view but i like it better as Cammie’s point of view if i do say so myself.
