Why stealing books online is…stealing

October 4, 2010 by Ally Carter 34 Comments

As long-time blog readers and twitter followers have no doubt heard me say before (like here. And here) reading books online that are not on the publisher’s website or the authors’ or on a promotional program via Amazon or somesuch is ILLEGAL.

It’s stealing.

And stealing, believe it or not, is wrong.

Now, for me, the truly frustrating part about this is that as soon as an author points out that stealing=wrong people who do the stealing jump to justify the stealing.

Oh, but I can’t afford to buy books…

Oh, but I only pirate books I’d never buy…

Oh, but I only pirate books I’ve already bought…

Oh, but I only pirate books I’d ordinarily get from the library…

Oh, but only…

Well, I’ve already talked about how all of those reasons are just excuses to pirate.  Just excuses to STEAL.  So I’m happy that today I don’t have to counter all those very greedy arguments because Jackson Pearce has done it for me.

Go Jackson!

Actually, this happens to a lot of people.
Just the other day I was downloading music and I saw a link to download ALL the twilight books.
I know exactly how authors feel because I plan to be one of them some day, and just the thought of that happening to me freaks me out.
Hope none of this happens to your books anymore Ally.
    P.S: I LOVE JACKSON <3

Hi Ally!!!! I freaking love your books! And that’s saying something because I read A LOT.

People who steal books online are sick jerks. I don’t have any money to buy books yet I refuse to download them! The library has become my home away from home. I totally agree with you and Jackson. It does cheat the authors and it’s just wrong.

Anyway, keep up the good work!!! I can’t wait for GG5 and Heist 2!

That’s so awful! How can people just steal books like that?

On a completely new, non-illegal, note. Do you ever do high school visits?

    Hi Ally!
I am really sorry for the people that pirate your books or anyone else’s books for that matter. As an aspiring writer, I am very thankful that you take the time to tell these people that pirating is wrong. I love your work and I hope that you know that you are an inspiration to me.
For the people that pirate, I really don’t understand why you do it. I love having a book in my hand and being able to feel the pages and have them as my own. Just, please stop and know that it may feel like an okay thing if you do it, but there are also thousands of people that do it too. You may wonder why if everyone else can do it, why can’t you? Well, because you are contributing to something that is illegal and effects the authors that you love. So please stop.

    🙂
    Have a nice day!!

Another thing…is stealing a song pirating? That is the only reason I don’t post my songs/books on the internet!! I am too afraid someone will take it.

I think it is terrible how people are stealing your books…. I love your books so much. I have every one of them besides the second (It was my least favorite but I still liked it)and I’ve read the fourth 4 times and the others twice. I am going to check your friend’s books if you don’t mind. You have excellent taste in books (To Kill A Mockingbird is one) and I trust you on this one :-).

is the second really your least favorite? i liked that one the most because that was when she first met zach. but since im a complete zach fan i didn’t like her indesision over zach and josh. but otherwise i thought it was one of the best.

I don’t understand why people would want to read a book on the computer anyway. I think to have an actual object is way better. Plus you give the author credit for what they wrote and all the hard work they put into the book. Love you books Ally. <3

It totaly agree with this vidio.STEALING BOOKS IS WRONG.And maybe some of these people dont know what their doing is wrong, but I senserialy doubt that.If the author were to go broke, or go on strike or whatever, then: NO MORE BOOKS!And that would realy stink, becuase I love reading. And P.S. the I pad anolegy (it is an anolegy right?I get them mixed up) is totaly true.

The second was my least because I didn’t like Zack’s attitude that much [(and plus I am a Josh fan even though he probably won’t come back into the series) Ms. Carter better not bring Josh back though because I liked Zack in the fourth one]. Liz is my favorite character because she reminds me of myself (granted that I am not as smart as she is) and Cammie is my second because she is someone I could not relate too and I think it is good for me to find a character that is unusual to me. Zack is sneaky and cute like all spies/assassins. (Cammie watch out!) Can’t wait for GG5!

Yes it is. If you don’t want it to be read, seen, or stolen, think twice about putting it on the internet, which anyone could be on, good or bad. No pictures that you don’t want people to see on social networking, no songs u don’t want stolen on youtube… Common sense.

I would just like to say first that pirating stuff on the internet is wrong. About the second book, I like the first one least, because I don’t much like Josh and Zach is one of my favorite characters… I don’t much like love stories, and the Gallagher Girls books are some of my favorite books. Why? Because I like books about spies. (BTW- Zach is waaaaaaaay more interesting than Josh…) And anyway, one of my favorite things about this series is that you can read the most recent book (only the good spy young) and find clues in the second book(cross my heart and hope to spy). Sometimes clues are in the third one, but a lot of the clues are in the second. CMH was my least favorite until I went back and read it after I read the most recent one. I always read slowly to catch details and then reread books, so this is how I catch little details…

exactly my point. zach is waaaay more interesting than josh. but i think that i like the second book alot was because a few years ago, i started reading the series out of order. i started with don’t judge a girl by her cover (the day that it came out) then i read the first. but i was wondering when zach came in ( cuz i read the 3rd first) so i was very excited to read the second book.

Yea I think that was a long time ago. You can still find the answers to the questions people asked. Maybe your question will be there… I missed it and had a question that wasn’t there… I hope there will be another one…
