Story behind the story

February 1, 2010 by Ally Carter Leave a Comment

In many ways, Gallagher Girls 4 was one of the hardest books I’ve ever written—probably because I actually wrote the book several times because   every draft saw significant changes.

I knew a few things very early on.  1. Cammie and Bex were going to London for winter break.  2. While they were there they were going to have a very scary encounter with a trusted friend.  3.  By the time the girls got back to school they weren’t going to have any idea what to believe or who to trust anymore.

Those were the facts I knew and those facts didn’t change.  But while I knew a lot of the facts about this book, I still struggled for months with the tone.  As people who have read Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover will know, the Gallagher Girls were left on something of a cliff at the end of GG3.

It’s not fun being on a cliff—not for a character or an author.  I said many, many times that this book is a tightrope—one misstep in any direction could ruin everything, but thanks to my wonderful editor and some trusted friends I’m very grateful that Cammie (and I) made it to the other side.
