How I write

There’s a famous quote (though not so famous, evidently, that I remember by whom) that goes something like “You never learn how to write books. You just learn how to write the book you’re writing right now.”

I agree with that. 100%

But I do think we learn generally how our processes go. Me? My process starts rough. Like building a big block of stone, let’s say.

And then I start chipping away at it little by little until it sort of looks like a statue.

Then I stand far away and try to figure out if, from a distance, it looks like I want it to look. Then I get my tools and fix what I don’t like.

Then I stand a little closer and look at it some more and get some smaller tools and start fixing the little things that bug me.

Then I put on my super close up glasses and I get my sandpaper.

And in between there is a lot of crying. And eating of chex mix.
