Mini blog: Thursday, in bullets
*It's raining. Which means I want to make it rain in every scene I write. It is a strange phenomenon, I know. But a real one.
*Tomorrow I leave for the Texas Book Festival! I'm super excited, but I've also reached the point where super excitement has morphed into "what the heck am I going to wear?!?!?"
*I heard from a fabulous reader, bookseller, book lover last night who LOVED Heist Society which made me really, really happy!
*Jennifer Lynn Barnes has been studying the New York Times series best-seller list and has determined that what's missing from the Gallagher Girls series is vampires. As she puts it "I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You Because I'm a Vampire" is a sure-fire hit in this market.
*Jennifer Lynn Barnes may be right.

mini blog: big days
Hey everybody,
I'd love to write more, but I've got a lot of pages to cover and not a lot of days to do it.
I will be taking a break, of course, this weekend to attend the Texas Book Festival. Hope to see many, many of you there!

Mini blog: Deadline Day!
Hey everyone!
It's deadline day!
It's been so fun to watch all of the awesome and sweet t-shirt logos come rolling in over the past few weeks, and today is the most fun of all. I feel very confident that we're going to have some great designs to choose from!
Who will do the choosing? I'm not sure. Me, of course. A few of my writer friends, probably. And maybe a person or two from my publishing house, Disney-Hyperion (they're all VERY excited to see the winners because I sent them all t-shirts with last year's winning design and they keep hinting around, asking when they can expect new t-shirts THIS year.)
When will we do the choosing? Again, I'm not exactly sure. As I've mentioned before I'm neck deep in GG4 rewrites, PLUS, I'll be attending the Texas Book Festival next week, so it may take a week or two to really give this the attention it deserves.
In the meantime, BIG thanks to everyone who entered! Your designs showed a lot of creativity and passion and fun!
Have a great week, everybody,
Ally
Heist Society--the cover!
How happy does this make me?
After much thought and work and worry the brilliant and talented people at Disney-Hyperion have developed what I think might possibly be the most GORGEOUS book cover in history.
I loooooove it!
If you'll remember, a few weeks ago I posted this behind-the-scenes peek of the photoshoot.
That's the model, Olga, and a whole crew of stylists and photographers and hair and makeup people who were tasked with the tremendous job of capturing a single picture that summarizes the tone, theme, and feel of an entire novel.
And you know what? They totally nailed it!
In fact, I think this might just call for a Heist Society miniexcerpt!
in stores everywhere February 9, 2010
Any other student might have flinched in that bright spotlight, but from the moment Katarina Bishop had set foot on the Colgan campus, she'd been something of an enigma. Some said she'd gained her last-minute slot because she was the daughter of an incredibly wealthy European buisnessman who had made a very generous donation. Some looked at her perfect posture and cool demeanor, rolled her first name across their tongues, and assumed that she was Russian royalty--one of the last of the Romonovs.
Some called her a hero; others called her a freak.
Everyone had heard a different story, but no one knew the truth...
Oh, and for the occasion I think I'll turn the comments back on for a little while!
I hope you like it as much as I do. AND I hope you'll enjoy getting to know Kat and her crew just as soon as February 9th rolls around! It was a fun, challenging, and incredibly rewarding book to write. Hopefully it will be as much joy to read.
Take care!

Two important reminders!
Hey everybody!
Because I know you're all dying for a status report on GG4 I'm proud to say that I turned in the first half of draft 3 to Editor Jen last night. Now, of course, I still have to do the last half. And I'll probably still have to do a draft 4 (and maybe 5, 10, 40) but forward progress is forward progress and I thought you'd like to know.
I also wanted to remind you that this coming Sunday is the last day to enter the t-shirt logo contest! Whoo hoo! We have several entries already, but it's not too late to get in on this very fun contest. Remember, we'll be judging based on creativity AND execution, so put your thinking caps on and give us your best work! (Find contest rules and details here.)
And last but not least I'm getting SO excited about the Texas Book Festival in Austin, TX over Halloween weekend!
Books!
Candy!
My three favorite things!
I'm seriously considering dressing up, but I'm afraid people would forget that it was Halloween and then I would be "that crazy author who shows up in weird outfits" instead of "that fun author who dressed up for Halloween at the book festival."
Crazy / fun...it's a very fine line sometimes.
But whether I'm in costume or not, you will be able to find me on Saturday, October 31 at 3:30 - 4:30 at the Back for More: Characters Who Wear Well Panel featuring Derrick Barnes, Pseudonymous Bosch, James A. Owen, and me! The panel will be moderated by Jon Scieszka and it should be a blast!
Please come. Please come. Please come.
And please don't laugh if I'm in costume.

* I should totally be walking now. But I'm not.
* Is anyone as excited about the premiere of that new USA show White Collar as I am? No, I didn't think so.
* Still working on GG4.
* Still totally wanting to show you the cover for Heist Society.
* Still can't.
* I hate to admit it, but I kinda thought Balloon Boy was a hoax as soon as I heard the words "Wife Swap."
* I walked 20 miles last week. If I'm going to do 20 this week I should be walking RIGHT NOW...
* But I'm not.
* And, finally, if anybody out there knows anyone in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area who has daughters in elementary school who might be interested in being MODELS in an American Girl Fashion show, please visit www.jltulsa.org for details.

Bad blogger!
Oh my gosh! It's been a week since I updated the blog! I don't know if that has happened since I started blogging four or so years ago. I'm so sorry, everyone!
Of course, I do have pretty decent (but boring) excuses--the biggest is that I've been putting all of my writing energy into rewriting Gallagher Girls 4!
It's not finished yet, but it's getting slowly but surely closer every day. I can't say much about it at this point except that this is a very, very tricky book to write because, as all of you who have finished DON'T JUDGE A GIRL BY HER COVER already know, Cammie is going to be in a precarious place during the spring semester of her junior year. She's dealing with a lot of issues, and it's my job to make sure she's dealing with them in the most satisfying way possible.
It's also been a busy week looking at awesome covers for both HEIST SOCIETY (in stores Feb 9, 2010) and GG4! (Yes, even though GG4 isn't finished quite yet, we're already well on our way to having a cover for it!)
While the covers are made by my amazing publisher, I still get to look at them and talk about them and make suggestions and stuff, so they can take up quite a bit of time sometimes.
Another thing that's been keeping me busy is this website. In the next few weeks I really hope to start a major remodel here at AllyCarter.com, so I've been looking around at other author sites, making notes, and just getting organized so that I can hopefully start working on making this site better in the very near future.
So that's been my week. See? I told you it was boring!
I hope that all of you have been busy reading and studying and, of course, working on your designs for the T-shirt design contest! (Full details available here.)
Entries are due one week from tomorrow, and even though we've already had several great entries there's still time to add YOUR entry to the mix!
Remember, we need a digital image that would be added to a t-shirt. All you need to make is the image itself--not an actual t-shirt. Not even a picture of a t-shirt. Just a high quality digital image that can be printed right on a t-shirt itself.
And now...well...I think I need to get back to doing the boring stuff. Because without the boring stuff the fun stuff never, ever happens!

How to get a literary agent.
Like most working authors, I frequently get to talk to people who are in the process of trying to break into publishing. And, frequently, they want to know if I have any advice on finding literary agents. To this I have two answers.
SHORT ANSWER: 1. Write a great book. 2. Follow the submission protocols of agents who represent similar books. 3. Wait. 4. Get an agent.
But the short answer is awfully short, I know. It's TRUE, mind you. But lacking some details that people just starting out might benefit from hearing, so now I'm going to share with you the LONG answer that I shared with a friend just this afternoon.
(Modified for blog purposes.)
As frequent blog readers already know, I do not recommend being in this business without an agent. Getting an agent is actually a surprisingly straightforward process once you have the right book (note that this is the hard part) and have researched who will be the best fit.
You don't need to know someone. You don't need an introduction. Agents are very, very used to finding talent via the submission protocols outlined on their websites. In fact, agents relish submissions because that IS where they find their clients—they find them there all the time.
Since submissions and queries are so important, many new writers can be surprised to hear that a lot of agents don’t make the first pass through the inbox themselves. For example, my agent, Kristin Nelson, has a great assistant who looks through the submissions first and pulls out the ones that Kristin will be most interested in.
I know some new writers are stunned that agents aren't reading every submission themselves, but rest assured that the assistants who read the queries are very highly trained and prepped on how to do so. Their job is to wade through the thousands of queries they receive and remove the obvious “no-s” --books that are in genres the agent doesn't represent, queries full of typos and obvious grammatical mistakes, etc.
So one of the first "tips" to finding an agent is "don't be an obvious no". Proofread your materials. Make sure they're as strong as they can be. And, of course, query the right agents for your book.
To find the "right agents" I recommend starting with sites like agentquery.com where you can search for a few books like yours and find out what agents represent those novels.
Also, if you're serious about your research, it would probably be worth it to pay $20 to get a one month subscription to PublishersMarketplace.com. There, you can search their deal database and find out who is selling stuff like yours. This is especially important because it doesn’t help much to know who sold a big book five years ago. You want someone who is selling stuff NOW.
Go to the websites for every agent you're interested in and look at their complete client list--read a few books from it (if you haven't already). Study the agent's blog (if he or she has one). Read and re-read and re-re-read their submission procedures. In short, do your homework.
The next step is to get your query materials in perfect shape. You’ll probably need an assortment of things. Some agents will require a one page synopsis, some will need a sample chapter (and the whole book should be as perfect as possible at this point, so this is the easy one). Almost all agents will require a query letter of some kind, so start working on one of those too. (And Kristin has some great examples here.)
It’s important to note, I think, that the term “dream agent” is really a fickle one. There are a lot of factors that will make an agent dreamy. Some people want an agent with the biggest possible agency and a history of doing the biggest possible deals. Some writers are better served by smaller agencies where you get more individual attention.
It really varies immensely, and I highly recommend you think a lot about they TYPE of agent you want--someone who is hands-on? Someone who is growing their business? Someone who is established? Someone who represents the big megastars of our industry? Or someone who is in a position to find the NEXT stars?
This isn't an easy process--not at all. But do you want to know a secret? Nothing in this business is. And if you've already written a great, killer, marketable book then this SHOULD be easy in comparison!
So, in conclusion, pick an assortment of agents who are currently selling books comparable to yours, research their query preferences, send them EXACTLY what they ask for. Wait. Repeat.
And that's really all there is to it.
Good luck!

Mini blog: still working
Hey everybody!
Thanks to everyone who has entered the t-shirt contest so far! If you haven't had a chance to enter yet, don't worry. You've still got time! (Deadline is October 25th.)
I'm sorry that the blog has been pretty slow/boring lately. But I think you'll appreciate the reason why: I'm trying to finish GG4!
It's slow going at this point, but it is going.
And now I'd better get back to it!

"Who is your reader?"
Hey everybody!
I hope you're having a great weekend. Thanks so much to all of you who have already entered the t-shirt contest! If you haven't, don't worry. There's still plenty of time to get your designs polished and sent.
Today I'm going to do another poll if that's okay. You see, being sorta scientific, it always bothers me that I don't have a really concrete answer to the question, "So, who is your reader?"
I get the question a lot, and while I think I know you guys, the thing that amazes me most is how you always surprise me.
So today if you don't mind I'd like to do just a real rough straw poll to see what's going on out there
I'm especially interested to see if people who might have read LYKY when when were twelve or thirteen are still interested in reading GG4 when they're fifteen or sixteen.
So...if you've got a sec. Please answer the questions above (for some reason, blogger I can't get the poll question to come after this. Sorry).
--Ally
Ps....I feel compelled to remind everyone that there is NO right or wrong answer to the above questions. Absolutely none. I want to learn about you--the real you--so there's no need to try to think about which answer sounds "best" because there's no such thing.
